Becoming an IEEE Certified Software
Development Professional (CSDP)
– One Developer’s Experiences
Is software engineering a profession? Is software engineering really even engineering? Should software engineers be licensed, as other professional engineers are?
For several years the IEEE Computer Society has been working to help establish software engineering as a recognized engineering discipline with professional status. A software engineering code of ethics has been developed, as well as a comprehensive Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) to represent the accepted, standard professional methods, techniques and knowledge that a professional software engineer should be familiar with. As part of this ongoing effort, the Computer Society has also established a certification program for software professionals - the Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) program.
Andy Huber will describe the Computer Society's CDSP program, including the
requirements for applying for CDSP certification, taking the qualifying exam,
and maintaining certification. He will describe his experiences in being
one of the software practitioners who "beta tested" the
process as one of the first group to be awarded certification. The talk
will include a quiz utilizing some sample questions from the qualifying exam to
illustrate what the test is like, in the hopes of helping you decide if
certification is a good thing and something you might want to pursue.
